Part A: Exploring Behaviour

What drives people behaviour around waste management?

Talk to your students about their own beliefs about the value of things and of the environment: Where have these values come from and what influences them?

Part B: Responding To And Creating Artworks

Step 1

Direct students to the Student Worksheet to respond and analyse the art work.

Step 2

Students will then plan and construct their own artworks.

Part C. Reviewing Artworks

Students could be asked to complete one or both of the following tasks:

Photograph their completed artwork in a landscape or other setting.
Write a review or personal response to a friend’s artwork (250-300 words).

Reflection

Invite students to consider their own artwork and to respond to the following (also available on the Student Worksheet):

What do I like the most about my artwork? What am I most proud of?
How well have I conveyed the message of my artwork?
How do the materials I have used help to support my message?
What do I think I could improve about my artwork?

Differentiated Learning

Extension activity:

1. Instructions for students - Rubbish may be used in the creation of music as well as art. Do some quick research on ‘The Garbage Symphony’ (see the ‘Landfill Harmonic’ video https://vimeo.com/52711779).

Landfill Harmonic- The world sends us garbage... We send back music.

2. Using this amazing story as stimulus, construct a working musical instrument using clean rubbish. Percussion instruments are the easiest.

Provisions for Learning Support: The rubbish art activity is appropriate and engaging for students with special needs. They may be invited to skip the planning stage and begin constructing their artwork immediately. Alternatively, they may wish to complete the extension activity of creating a musical instrument.
