These resources are part of our The Final Quarter Curriculum Resources, created in collaboration with Shark Island Productions, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Reconciliation Australia, Narragunnawali and The Final Quarter.

This unit for Years 7 - 10, Purposeful Language, is designed to

  • develop critical analysis skills by exploring verbal and nonverbal techniques, including tone, language choice and emphasis, and their impact on the perception of public and private apologies
  • build critical thinking skills through scaffolded evaluation of strengths and weaknesses of criticism
  • provide opportunities to practise writing skills by drafting effective apologies and revising criticisms to change the impact on the intended audience
  • support students in crafting and delivering motivational speeches using mentor texts and peer feedback to enhance writing and performance
  • deepen students' understanding of the power of language in shaping attitudes and behaviours towards racism and reconciliation
  • evaluate real-world defences featured in The Final Quarter, considering the effectiveness of different defensive strategies.
