Exploring First Nations Influence, Racism, and Civil Rights in the AFL
This unit, created in collaboration with Collingwood Football Club, explores the history of First Nations contributions to AFL, from the origins of the game with Marngrook to modern-day efforts for inclusivity. Students will critically examine the impact of racism in AFL, analyse significant historical moments, and investigate how the Collingwood Football Club is actively working towards positive change through its Do Better report. Through a mix of historical research, critical analysis, and creative projects, students will gain a deeper understanding of how sport intersects with civil rights, focusing on social justice and inclusion within the AFL.
By the end of the unit, students will be equipped to advocate for civil rights and reflect on how sporting communities can continue to promote equality for First Nations peoples and other marginalised groups in Australian society.
