Step 1. Play this clip. Have students write down words that they do not know the meaning of.

Step 2. Provide definitions for each of the terms the students do not understand. To encourage students using reputable sources, use the online Macquarie Dictionary to find definitions together as a class. In particular, ensure that students are provided definitions for reparations and compensation.

Step 2. Direct students to respond to these questions on the Student Worksheet:

Possible answer: Reparations were made as recognition of the harm done by government policies to living members of the Stolen Generations.

Why was there an apology from Kevin Rudd?

Possible answer: Kevin Rudd apologised to acknowledge the harm caused by various Australian laws and governments and to open the doors to healing and reparations.

Step 1. Explain to students that they will be comparing previous and current legislation in the table in their Student Worksheets. For this task, students will need a device so they can access the suggested links.

Reflection: Protecting children

Step 1. Ask students to return to the essential question of the lesson: How has the term 'protecting children' (and its various forms) changed its meaning throughout the decades?

Step 2. Have students write a short response to this question. Ideally they will refer to the historical Acts studied in the lesson. They may choose to complete this in their Student Worksheet.

Differentiated Learning

We trust that teachers are the best equipped to know how to cater to the diversity in their classes. At Cool Australia, we incorporate a variety of differentiation strategies into each lesson. Firstly, each lesson in this unit appeals to an array of different learning preferences. Learning activities can be completed in a number of different ways - if a student feels more comfortable speaking rather than writing, there are opportunities to accommodate this. In lessons that feature group work or learning stations, we trust that teachers will use their discretion in knowing how to best organise their students in accordance to positive working relationships and ability. Graphic organisers and scaffolds are often included so students can ‘visually think’ and keep a record of their work. While our lessons are designed to be 55 - 60 minutes in length, we trust that teachers will manipulate lesson and segment times according to the needs of their students.
