Teaching Sequence

Work through this resource material in the following sequence:

5 minutes - Introduction
10 minutes - Part A: Finding Healthy Solutions
30 minutes - Part B: Get Up and Groove
30 minutes - Part C: Healthy Me, Healthy Choices
15 minutes - Reflection: Share and Shine

Introduction

Step 1.

Bring the whole class together to begin the session and ask the students:

Have you heard the word 'fabulous' before? What does it mean?
What do you think 'fabulous foods' might be?
Are fabulous foods natural, i.e. found in nature, or are they created by humans (i.e., processed foods)?

Step 2.

Collect the students’ ideas by writing them up on the board to be used later in the session.

Part A: Finding Healthy solutions

Step 1.

As a whole class view the clip:

Ask the students to pay attention to what they see. Encourage the students to look out for ‘superfoods’ (our fabulous foods), asking ‘I wonder what they could be?’

Step 2.

Organise the students to complete a quick think, pair, share activity.

Think: Start by giving the students a short ‘think’ time to remember one fruit and one vegetable they saw in the clip.

Pair: Quickly pair the students with a partner. Allow the students to move around to find a new partner, finding someone who is the same height. With their partner, ask the students to share the fruit or vegetable that they saw on the clip. Let the students know that they will be sharing their partner's answers back to the class, so they should pay attention to them!

Share: Select three student pairs to share what their partner said. What was their fruit? What was their vegetable? List the student ideas on the board as they are shared.

Part B: Get Up and Groove

This is an active part of the lesson: clear some space and make sure the students can move around. Ensure that the students can also see the screen as they will view clips, as well as moving to the groove.

Step 1.

As a whole group get the students up and ready to be active. It is important to take the lead and move around to the music in the clips with the students. Encourage different movements, have fun and be a positive, active role model for the students to follow.

Encourage all the students to participate, to get up and groove to the music. Celebrate the movers and encourage those that are shy to simply walk on the spot.

Step 2.

Explain to students that you have been watching videos about healthy eating and doing exercise. Ask them: which is more important? Is it more important to eat healthy foods or to keep active? Ask students to jump up and down for the answer they think is correct.

The answer, of course, is that both are important! You can’t just have one or the other - they’re both a part of a healthy lifestyle, along with drinking water and getting enough sleep.

Step 3.

As a whole class, watch the next clip:

Challenge the students to move around more. Ask the student if they feel thirsty now after all of that moving around. If so, take time to grab a drink of wonderful water.

Part C: Healthy Me, Healthy Choices

In this next part, students draw a healthy body and fill it in with healthy food and exercise activities. They could do this task individually in their workbooks, or you could lead a class discussion and draw one large figure on the board. If you do draw one big picture, consider drawing it on butcher’s paper so you can turn it into a poster at the end.

Step 1.

Bring the class back together. On a piece of poster paper, they should draw an outline of a person, and then fill it in with the different things we put into our body to stay healthy. The arms might be full of fresh fruit (apples, bananas), the legs could be full of fresh vegetables (broccoli, lettuce, carrots), and the torso full of fresh water. Point out to students that they should leave the space in the head empty for now.

Step 2.

Around the body, students should draw the different ways they can exercise with their bodies to keep fit and healthy.

For example:

ball games (footballs, netballs, tennis ball, hockey balls, cricket bat, soccer ball)
walking in a forest (trees)
fishing
skateboarding
swimming
going to the beach
else anything students like to do outside.

Step 3.

Finally, remind students that good sleep is also part of a healthy lifestyle. Ask them to draw a sleepy scene in their heads (that is, in the heads of their figures) as a final part of that healthy living.

Step 4.

Along with their pictures, ask students to write in three positive actions they could take for each ‘Healthy Me’ area.

Fabulous food: what are some good healthy foods they could eat?
Healthy habits: what are their favourite types of exercise?
Restful recharge: how do they get a healthy sleep routine? This could be as simple as getting enough sleep each night, or it could be things to help them wind down, like not watching TV right before bed.

Give students time to draw their ideas in each of the sections. Encourage them to draw and share their healthy choices, great ways to exercise and how to recharge their bodies.

Reflection

Regroup the students and request that they sit in a circle to share their work. The reflections involve a reflection process of Share and Shine, where students share their worksheet posters with the class. Provide time for each student to simply show their work by holding it up in the circle or laying it down flat for others to see. Invite one or two students to share their work in greater detail. Following the share and shine from each student, the posters can be put up in a shared open space to share the message of healthy choices with others.
