Students will:

practise different throwing techniques in a variety of situations.

Success criteria

Students can:

execute different throwing techniques successfully
identify which technique should be used in a situation
use data representations to justify their choices.

Preparation:

This is a split lesson, with the ‘Tune In’ and ‘Find Out’ phases happening first. Students start by exploring throwing skills and techniques used in different sports before creating a plan to improve their throws. They then enact their plan over a period of time. This could be 4 weeks or a whole term, depending on what suits you! Students will apply their mathematical skills to measure their journey.

Tune In: Throwing skills

Step 1

Explain to your students that Team Australia from the Commonwealth Games has issued the class a throw-down challenge to assess their ability to throw like professional athletes.

Step 2

Invite students to look at the different Commonwealth Games sports and the different throwing techniques used in each sport:

rugby (underarm 2-handed throw)
netball (shoulder pass) - (watch from 1:20 - 2:25)
basketball (chest pass)
cricket (overarm throw) - (watch from 0:00 - 1:47)

Step 3

Outline to students that Team Australia from the Commonwealth Games has given them 4 challenges. Read them to the class below:

Basketball 3x3 (chest pass)

How many successful chest passes can you do with a friend in 1 minute? (5m apart)

Netball (shoulder pass)

What is the longest successful shoulder pass you can do?

Cricket (overarm throw)

What distance can you hit the target from? (intervals of 5m)

Rugby (Underarm 2-handed throw)

What is the longest successful torpedo pass you can do?

Step 1

In an open space, lead your students through warm-up activities, focusing on the chest and arms.

Step 2

Explain the 4 rotation stations (basketball 3x3, netball, rugby and cricket) to your class and how to record their data on their worksheet.

Step 3

Divide the class into 4 groups and ask them to find a partner in their group (or a group of 3 if necessary!). Have the students complete the activity at each station and then rotate to the next station. Make sure all students have an opportunity to record their data at each station.

Step 4

After all students have rotated through the stations, direct them to answer the following questions:

Which style of throw was the most accurate?
Which style of throw went the farthest?
What could we do to get better?

Step 5

In their 4 groups, students create a weekly training plan to practise their throwing and what they can do to improve. Give them examples of weekly workouts to see what training an athlete does.

Invite the groups to present their plans to the class and either vote on which plan the class wants to follow, or take the best elements from all the plans and create a new one.

Take Action: Representing our results

Step 1

Your students’ task is to create a data display of their success using different techniques in different situations. Students are to use digital tools such as Excel. For example, creating a graph for ‘Throw for Distance’ with the effectiveness of each technique.

Step 2

Lead a class discussion with your students using the Think Pair Share thinking routine on the following prompt:

Which techniques best suit which situation? (eg chest pass - short distance, high accuracy, shoulder pass - better for distance, lower accuracy.)

Invite your students to reflect on the class by asking them:

Which of the sports that we have explored would you like to keep building your skills in?
What do you like about this sport?
