Step 1.

If you aren't already outside, take the class to your outdoor learning space. Review outdoor learning rules and the benefits of outdoor learning with students, including potential hazards and actions to take in the event of hazards.

Step 2. Discuss:

Where might we see examples of mathematical concepts in the real world?
What angles do we know?

Step 1.

Explain to students that it is important to be able to estimate and identify angle sizes in their surroundings and not simply those on a page. While it may at first appear to be a basic skill, the ability to estimate and measure angles is a vital skill when considering bearings, navigation, building and art or design. During today's lesson students will be building maths skills by studying angles in the school grounds.

Step 2.

Distribute one copy of the Types of Angles - Worksheet to each student and ask them to participate in a 'Think, Pair, Share' thinking routine about their answers.

Think Pair Share

Think - students independently think about an issue or question and record their thoughts.

Pair - students work in pairs to discuss their ideas and record new thoughts.

Share - students share their thoughts with the whole group or with other pairs to reach consensus.

Step 3.

Students should individually draw a diagram and write a description of each angle, then discuss their answer with another student.

Step 4.

Come together as a class and engage students in a class discussion to ensure all students have the correct answers in their table. Use this discussion to identify where students need support in understanding different kinds of angles. Where necessary, review this information before moving on to the next step.

Take action: Finding angles in the real world

Step 1.

Explain that they are going to walk around the schoolyard, looking for a variety of different types of angles in different sizes. Encourage students to observe their environment, taking time to look for places they wouldn’t usually see angles. Ask students if they can find natural objects that have angles. Encourage students to think carefully about making their directions clear so that other groups can locate the angles during the Angle Hunt. Give each group a copy of the Finding Angles In Our School - Worksheet. Refer students to the table on this worksheet and discuss the example that is provided.

Step 2.

Break the class into mixed-ability groups of 2 or 3.

Step 3.

Allow students time to find and record angles. Once groups have located the angle they are to draw it, estimate its size and record the directions to the angle using the Finding Angles In Our School - Worksheet.

Step 4.

Ask students to individually complete the Reflection activity below (also available on the Student Worksheet). This may be completed as homework or in class, followed by a discussion. This can use this as a summative assessment.

Ask students to draw a tree that contains all the angles they were asked to find in the activity, and label the size and name of each angle. See example below:
