Work through this resource material in the following sequence:

Part A: What are my influences?

Step 1.

Begin by guiding a discussion around the concept that there are many circumstances, people and experiences that shape a person, their identity and their current situation.

Step 2.

Ask students to reflect on the circumstances, people and experiences that have influenced them and their lives so far. They could use the 'My Influences' mind map to organise their thoughts. Invite students to complete the chart by naming each person or situation they judge as a personal influence, and describing how their personality/identity has been affected on the opposite line of the chart. An example of a complete influences chart can be seen below:

Step 3.

Once students have finished their influences chart, lead a discussion about characters that they see in THE OASIS and their life experiences and influences. Highlight that many of those experiences have shaped the people that they are and have had a significant impact on the circumstance they are experiencing.

Part B: View THE OASIS

Step 1.

As a class watch parts 3 and 4 of THE OASIS. Before you start the clips, invite students to choose a character to focus on as they watch. Characters students could choose to focus on are:

Tommy

While students are watching the clips, ask them to identify the people, circumstances and experiences that impact their chosen character’s life. They will need to use this information to complete Part C.

Part C: Character Future Wheel

The Future Wheel is a graphic organiser that helps to visualise how one life experience may then influence other aspects of life and ultimately result in either a desirable or undesirable life outcome. Ask students to complete a Future Wheel based on the experiences of their chosen character. Where possible, students should use the information shown about the characters in the film, however they may also extrapolate based on the information that is provided in THE OASIS. Encourage students to take note of the links on the Future Wheel so that they can try and show relationships between their examples. An example of a Future Wheel based on Haley can be seen below:

Note: Individual character clips can be found on THE OASIS webpage. You could direct students to these when completing their Future Wheels.

Reflection

After completing the Future Wheel for their chosen character, students complete a second wheel, however this time they imagine a set of circumstances where the positive supports are utilised and health-seeking behaviours are demonstrated. Students are required to imagine an alternate set of circumstances for their character as well as the possible outcomes that these behaviours may influence, for example:

Students summarise their new Future Wheel by responding to the following questions:

Explain how the two Future Wheels differed for your chosen character.
Identify the experiences, people and circumstances that were within your character's control and the one that were outside of their control.
Choose one factor that was within your character's control and explain what they could have done to further support their own health or well being.

Differentiated Learning

Extension: Students could complete a short diary entry for their chosen character from three different perspectives. The first from the perspective of the character they have seen on THE OASIS, the second from the perspective of the character they have described in their final Future Wheel and the third from the perspective of Paul Moulds as he may view them. The diary entry should focus on the experiences of the character, how they feel about their experiences and how they plan to overcome them.

Provisional Learning Support: Students could complete an influences chart for Part C rather than a Future Wheel, or students could complete their Future Wheel in collaboration with their classmates.
