Part A: Activating Prior Knowledge

Begin by briefly discussing the concepts of waste and recycling or re-using rubbish. Ask students to think about when they throw something away, where is away?

Part B: The Story Of Waste

Step 1

Read/view the book set for study.

Step 2

Students respond to the book and write a review using the scaffolded worksheet provided. They should evaluate the story, the graphics and the message. Stage 3 students should write enough to use all of the lines provided.

Step 3

In groups of 2 or 3, students depict the journey of a piece of rubbish in the book (e.g. Dougal the bear) from manufacture to dumping to recycling or re-use by creating a colourful poster with text and graphics.

This can be done in any form they wish (some ideas are on the worksheet). Students might need to expand on the story and imagine where, when and how the object might have been made.

Step 4

Students can share their story with the class, with other students providing feedback about each story. Consider the following format for the feedback:

Something I liked about this story...
Something I would like to know more about...

Remind students to be kind, helpful and specific when providing feedback.

Differentiated Learning

Provisions for Learning Support: These activities are appropriate for students with special needs, however, some teachers may wish to omit the book review activity.

Extension: Students research other good news stories about recycling. e.g. ‘Landfill Harmonic’ or ‘Garbage Symphony’ (stories about musical instruments made from rubbish) and write a paragraph or 5 dot points describing this recycling story. This activity will require internet access.
