Step 1.

The women’s football world cup is coming to Australia, and our mighty Matildas will be playing their hardest. How many goals do you think they will score? I wonder if we can score any goals!

Today we’re going to play a game of tabletop soccer and keep track of our score. Divide the class into groups of three or four students. Each group will need one Tabletop Soccer Worksheet, 2 craft sticks and some tape. Tape each stick vertically to the side of a desk, about 20cm apart, to make some soccer goals. At the other end of the desk, place a small piece of tape on the tabletop for the penalty spot. Write each student’s name across the top of the score sheet.

Each student has 10 attempts to score a goal. They place the ball on the penalty spot, and they can push, hit or flick the ball to try and get it through the goal. As they go, they need to keep track of goals scored on their score sheet. If they have learnt about tally marks, they can use them! If not, they can keep track by drawing stars or smiley faces. When everyone has had ten attempts, each team totals their score.

Step 2.

On the board or butcher's paper, draw an x-axis and a y-axis. Write the group names along the x-axis and the number of goals up the y-axis. Using the score from each group, create a pictogram showing their total score. Your final pictogram may look like this:

Wow, we scored a lot of goals! I wonder how many goals the Matildas have scored? Using the Meet the Mighty Matildas Worksheet, let’s create a bar graph showing how many goals these players have scored for the Matildas.

Note: For more confident students, they can work individually to colour in the number of boxes that correspond with that player’s score. For students who have not encountered a bar graph before, you can work through it together as a class, looking at each player and colouring the number of boxes as required. For students needing support, have them select only some players (as many as possible) and record their scores.

Step 2.

Share these bar graphs with the class. You can ask questions such as:

who has scored the most goals so far?
who has scored the second most goals so far?
who has scored the least goals so far?

Extension: By the way, there is one very special person who isn’t on this graph, and that is the captain of the Matildas, Sam Kerr. Does anyone want to guess how many goals she has scored? She has scored 63 goals for Australia, which is the most any Australian player has scored! Discuss with students how we could represent Sam Kerr’s goals on this graph and what we would need to change to show her goal total.

Take action: Keeping score

Step 1.

Now we know how to make a bar graph, let’s use one to follow the women’s world cup! Show students the ‘How many goals’ worksheet. Designate 2 or 3 countries to each student. After each game, have the students add the goals scored to the worksheet and, as a class, track the total number of goals scored throughout the women’s world cup.

Step 2.

As the world cup goes on, discuss the display with students. You might like to think about

Which county has the most goals?
Which one has the least?
Where is Australia sitting?
Does the number of goals scored match the country’s ranking?
Did the country that scored the most goals win the world cup?

Reflection

Pose the following question to the students:

Which team do you want to follow in the world cup? Why do you want to support that team?
