Inside And Outside Me - Activity Instructions

Part A: We Are All Lovely

Step 1.

Begin by watching the following story. As you watch, makes some notes or doodles about what you notice in the story.

Once the video finishes, talk to someone in your family about what you think might be the message of the story. Use your notes or doodles to remind you of what you noticed in the story.

We think this story is trying to tell us that we all appear different on the ‘outside’ and we are all different on the ‘inside’. For example, we all have different interests, emotional responses, wants and needs, and we all think differently.

Discuss the following questions with a parent/caregiver:

What do you think this story is about?
Do you think we are all different on the inside and the outside? Why or why not?

Step 2.

With the help of a parent/caregiver, you will now complete an activity to help you understand and identify some of the different ways that you think about things.

Take two pieces of scrap paper. Make a red cross (x) on one of the pieces of paper, and a blue cross (x) on the other. Place the two pieces of paper on the floor at least two metres apart.

Read out the following statements one at a time so your parent/caregiver can hear you (or get your parent/caregiver to read them out with/for you). With each statement, think about whether you agree or disagree with the statement. Both you and your parent/caregiver should stand on the sign that most aligns with how you feel about the statement.

As you read each statement take a moment to discuss the statement with your parent/caregiver.

Hopefully, this activity will help you understand that we are not only different in the way we look, we also have many differences in ways that cannot be seen, such as our personalities and the ways that we think.

Part B: Inside and Outside of Me

Step 1.

Next, you will complete a task to represent the differences that make us unique on both the inside and the outside. You will do this by drawing two pictures of yourself to show what you 'look like' on the inside and the outside.

Take two pieces of A4 paper and title one ‘Outside Me’ and title the other ‘Inside Me’. Start drawing your two pictures! Your parent/caregiver could also do the same for themself.

Part C: What Does This Have To Do With Inclusion?

Step 1.

Take a moment to look up the term ‘inclusion’ in a dictionary (an online dictionary is fine). Read out the definition and try to put it in your own words (writing it down can help).

Step 2.

Now think about why understanding that people have inside and outside lives might be important in terms of inclusion. Have a conversation about this with a parent/caregiver, or write your thoughts down in a few sentences and share these with your parent/caregiver.

Think about the following questions in your discussion, or try to answer these questions in your writing:

Can we tell everything about a person from what we see on the outside?
Do we all need the same things to be successful?
What is the best way to find out what a person needs and how you can help or support them?
What are some of the things ‘inside’ you that affect ‘outside’ you? For example, does the way you feel about yourself affect whether you are happy or sad sometimes?

Take It Further

If you enjoyed standing on the different coloured crosses and thinking about how you feel and act, you could repeat the activity using the following topics (you will need to think up some of your own statements/sentences to read out):

Whether your thinking is organised or free-flowing
How you express your feelings
What environmental factors help you learn best
What senses you learn best through (e.g. listening, reading, watching etc)
What situations you are comfortable/uncomfortable in
How you feel in social situations.
