Antisugar Ads - Activity Instructions

If someone on TV told you what to eat, would you do what they say? What if they made a compelling argument? In this activity you’ll view some ads that explain why eating too much sugar isn’t the best idea for your health. Using some of the techniques you observed, you’ll then make your own ad.

Did you know that, on average, Australians consume 22 kg of added sugar every year? Consuming too much sugar is dangerous for our health, but we aren’t always aware just how much we’re taking in. On average, we consume 14-16 teaspoons of added sugar per day. Teenagers consume more than 20 teaspoons per day. The World Health Organization says we should limit our daily added sugar intake to six teaspoons for good health. To put that in perspective, there are 4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon. If something has 20 grams of sugar, that's five teaspoons of sugar!

Part B: Make Your Own Advertisement

Step 1.

You will be making your own print or video advertisement explaining the dangers of consuming too much added sugar. The first step is to plan what it will include. Answer the questions below:

• How can I grab the audience’s attention?

• How will I visually show something bad about sugary food?

• How can I describe the problem in a few words or numbers?

• How can I showcase a solution?

Step 2.

Get started! Either draw some images or find some online (depending on what type of advertisement you are doing). Add in your text. If you’re creating a video, start by drawing up a storyboard, then get filming.

Step 3.

Find a way to display your advertisement - it could be through social media, in your home, or somewhere else.
