Part A: The Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge

Step 1

Explain to students they are going to undertake a unit of work called the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge, with the goal of having their own avatar drafted by the Sydney Swans AFL team, as either a player or member of the support team.

Explain to students that the unit will be focused on personal and community health and wellbeing, and they will have the opportunity to explore several related topics.

Also explain to students that they will be able to collect tokens as they work through the unit and a certificate at the end. Let them know you will explain the details later in the lesson.

Step 2

Step 3

Explain to students that while the players (or athletes) are the people we usually follow and talk about when it comes to sports, there is actually a whole team of other people involved in making sporting teams successful - especially professional ones.

Invite students to suggest supporting members of a professional sports team and list them on the left side of the board under the heading “Support Team”. Encourage them to explore the necessity of the various roles and how each support person has their own skills and knowledge.
Possible answers: Coach, physiotherapist, nutritionist, dietitian, team manager, marketing team, uniform designer, fan club, etc.

Step 4

On the right side of the whiteboard, write the heading “Support Network”. Facilitate a class discussion around what a personal support network might be. Note down their ideas as a mind-map or list.

Guide a discussion using the following questions:

Do you have people you can call on when you need help or are just regularly there for you?
What is the benefit of surrounding yourself with a team with a diverse range of skills and knowledge?

You might like to have students transfer these mind-maps into their books, and expand upon them with their own ideas, or names of people who support them in various aspects of their lives.

Part B: Challenge Set Up

Step 1

Distribute the Support Team Worksheet, and explain that they can use the template to list their team of support people. These should be people who encourage and help them out in everyday life and take care of their health. Invite students to write in the names and supportive qualities these people possess, for example, “Mum. She’s always encouraging me to try my best and says she’s proud of me.”

Invite students to paste this in a workbook (or place in a folder) that they can use for all their Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge activities.

Step 2

Explain to students that they will be creating their very own avatar. They will need to design a uniform for their avatar and give them a name (they can use their own name or a made-up one).

Read the following:

Each year, the AFL holds the Sir Douglas Nicholls Indigenous Round and each team wears a specially designed guernsey that displays colours, symbols, designs and patterns from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Explain that this was the 2018 jersey for the Sydney Swans and it combines elements of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

Step 3

Distribute the Volkswagen Footy Fit Avatar Worksheet and encourage students to investigate their own cultural heritage for inspiration on colours, symbols, designs and patterns to use on their avatar’s uniform. Give them time to complete the design.

Students might like to cut out their uniform design and draw or cut and paste a head (maybe a photo of themself) and limbs, sticking all the parts together with popsicle sticks down the torso and each limb, to keep it from buckling. They could then pin their Avatar up beside their Stadium Scoreboard.

Step 4

Distribute the Volkswagen Footy Fit Stadium Scoreboard (printed as A3) and the Student Worksheet.

Now it’s time to explain the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Scoring Framework! They have access to the Award/team role table on their Student Worksheets.

Explain to students that they will need to achieve a certain level of skill in each of the four categories:

Healthy Habits
Healthy Mindset
Body Knowledge
Physical Skills.

Completing activities earns them tokens to stick on their Stadium Scoreboard. They can earn tokens specific to each category (provide them each with one A4 copy of the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Tokens or keep them in a folder so you can distribute them as earned). As they earn tokens, they should first fill the front stands on the Stadium Scoreboard. As a bonus, they can also earn VW Sponsorship tokens for winning games or competitions. These can be used in any section of their Stadium Scoreboard.

Explain that there will be plenty of opportunities for them to earn tokens by completing activities throughout the lessons, but there will also be additional activities they will need to complete in order to get sufficient tokens to qualify for certificates, roles or awards. These activities will be provided on a Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Game Plan that they will receive in the next lesson.

Step them through the following scoring framework, using the column relevant to their year level:

You can show them the Sydney Swans Support Team Chart so students understand how the team roles work.

Step 5

Give students time to decorate their Stadium Scoreboard, leaving the 'My Avatar' section blank for now. Display these in an accessible location around the classroom so students can constantly update them by cutting out and sticking on the relevant Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Tokens.

Celebration: At the conclusion of the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge unit, take time to celebrate the students’ achievements.

Part C: Dice Footy

Sponsorship Token Alert!

This game is a good opportunity for students to win a Sponsorship token. If they win their game of Dice Footy they can earn one Sponsorship token to add to ANY section of their Stadium Scoreboard.

Step 1

When students have completed their other tasks, invite them to watch Dane Rampe play Tom Lynch in a game of dice footy to understand the rules. They may only need to watch part of the video to get a feel for the game.

If you have available devices, you may be able to have students complete this independently or in pairs, rather than waiting for the whole class to finish the previous activities.

Step 2

Invite students to find a partner to play with and ensure each pair has two dice and a flat playing area.

How to play:

Person A rolls two dice, one for how many goals kicked in a quarter, one for how many behinds kicked.
Note: If you have different coloured dice, choose which colour represents the goals and which represents the behinds. If not, roll once first for goals, then again for behinds.
Person A then calculates the points scored in the quarter by multiplying the goals kicked by 6 and adding this to the behinds to get the total score.
Person B completes Steps 1 and 2.
Alternate turns until all four quarters have been filled. Students can use this template on the Student Worksheet to keep score.

Step 3

Award any winning students a Sponsorship token to stick on their Stadium Scoreboard anywhere they choose.

Reflection

Invite students to respond to the following questions in their Volkswagen Footy Fit workbook or using the Student Worksheet:

What are three actions you can take to be a supportive member of someone else’s team?
For example:
- Thank your mum, dad or caregiver for cooking dinner tonight, or offer to help
- Help your sibling or friend with their homework
- Clean up rubbish around class without being asked.

Differentiated Learning

Extension -

Research careers related to the sporting industry, that are not athletic roles. Create an organisational chart for a sports team of your choice.
Research the Sir Douglas Nicholls Indigenous Rounds, or Sir Douglas Nicholls himself. Reflect on the way the AFL and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples work together towards Reconciliation. Earn one Healthy Mindset token.

Provisions for Learning Support -

Some students (especially younger ones) may need help with the rules and multiplication task for Dice Footy. It might work better to walk the students through the video, demonstrating the scoring system and checking for understanding.
Some students may not be able to achieve more than 15-20 tokens for their Stadium Scoreboard. Use your discretion and knowledge of the student’s capabilities when discussing the scoring system and consider making personalised agreements with certain students so they can still achieve a Certificate of Completion and become a class team Fan Club member.
