plan and conduct a statistical investigation into how playing from a wheelchair impacts performance and how the rule variations accommodate this.

Step 1

Show your students the following video:

Ask your students, ‘Why were all the kids rolling around? Why didn’t they just play regular basketball with their neighbour?’

Explain to your students that para-athletes don’t compete in separate games at the Commonwealth Games, and modified versions of sports occur alongside unmodified events. Let’s explore these events.

Step 2

Show your students the following clips of Commonwealth Games athletes who use mobility aids.

After the clips, ask your students to identify some of the modifications to the sport to make it fair for wheelchair users to compete.

Step 3

Let’s take a closer look at a specific sport: basketball. As a class, compare the 2 forms of 3x3 basketball at the Commonwealth Games. Watch the following videos with your students:

Ask students to think about the similarities and differences. They might compare the following:

number of players
playing space
shot clock
equipment
scoring
time
hoop height
court size

Now, invite your students to reflect on the following questions:

Which sport do you think is more difficult?
Which sport do you think is more physically demanding?

Find Out: Statistical investigation

Step 1

Students will plan a statistical investigation of their performance in basketball 3x3 compared to wheelchair basketball 3x3. First, they will need to choose some key skills to compare.

For example:

taking 10 free throws from the same place, both seated and standing
number of successful passes out of 10 at a set distance, both seated and standing
number of successful passes in 2 minutes, both seated and standing.

Step 2

Once students have planned their investigation, they are ready to collect their data. Have the students undertake their investigation in pairs and record their data.

Step 3

Students will quickly realise that taking a seated free throw is more difficult than a standing free throw, and we can use Pythagoras’ Theorem to explain why. Have your students measure the distance from the free throw spot to the backboard and from the ground to the middle of the backboard (where they are trying to hit on their throws).

In pairs, have students measure the distance from the ground to the centre of the ball in both their seated and standing free-throw positions. Record this data on the student worksheet.

Take Action: Data analysis

Step 1

Students will create representations of their data comparing their performance in wheelchair basketball 3x3 to basketball 3x3.

Step 2

Students write a reflection based on their collected data, considering the limitations of any inferences.

Have students answer the questions on the Student Worksheet. Use these questions as an exit ticket or run a think, pair, share routine to spark classroom discussion. We have provided some commonly suggested ideas for these questions in brackets.

The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) uses a classification code to make sure players meet the Minimum Impairment Criteria (MIC) to play wheelchair basketball 3x3 at an international level. However, some countries, such as the United States of America, allow able-bodied and impaired players to compete equally in wheelchair basketball 3x3.

What are the advantages of allowing able-bodied athletes to compete in wheelchair basketball 3x3?

Suggested response: promotes the sport, provides more players for competitions, removes segregation of disabled players

What are the disadvantages of allowing able-bodied athletes to compete in wheelchair basketball 3x3?

Suggested response: able-bodied players have an advantage of balance and strength, takes away places on teams for disabled players, takes away facilities and equipment for disabled players

What are the barriers to entry for people with disabilities to play wheelchair basketball 3x3?

Suggested responses: cost of equipment, lack of competition, inaccessible facilities, lack of trained coaches, lack of sport awareness
