Download the Teacher’s Guidebook prior to the lesson. This resource contains information on the science behind the Embrace Kids Classroom Program, top tips for implementing the program, approaches that are not recommended, and where to go for further support. Definitely a must-read!

Step 1

Across the film clips, we have seen both children and adults using their voices to promote positive self-image, such as Audrey Mason-Hyde’s TEDx Talk. Let’s take another look at this talk:

Ask your students:

What do you like about Audrey’s talk?
What caught your attention?
Why is Audrey using their Voice?
What are they trying to achieve?
Who is their audience?

Step 1

Everyone has the power to make change happen! Using the student worksheet, individually or in pairs, write and present a two-minute speech inspiring younger kids to Embrace their bodies. Ask students to look at our brainstorm from earlier and choose an idea they feel most strongly about for their theme.

Step 2

When writing our speeches, remind students to consider:

a clear theme and/or message
a strong, attention-grabbing introduction
a conclusion that reiterates the key points.
to consider their audience and who they are talking to

Learning Extension: Students can share their speeches in small groups and provide input and suggestions to their peers.

Tips for providing feedback

Be kind - It can be hard to share your ideas with others, so remain kind and supportive.

Be specific - Be clear about what you think and why. Rather than saying, ‘I like the colours, ’ say something like ‘, I like the ways those colours help create a mood that supports your message.

Be helpful - Try not to say what is strong or weak, but make suggestions about how things could be improved.

Step 3

Set a time to present your speeches to younger students at your school! You might choose to add an Embrace Kids element to your assemblies. You could set a time with a specific year level and have your students present to small groups. You could record the presentations and share them as a resource with other classes.

Reflection

If your class wants to show their commitment to Embracing their bodies, they can take the pledge at The Embrace Hub. Children add their first name and age, which is counted towards the total number of kids who have Embraced their bodies around Australia and the world. Print and display the pledge printable poster in your classroom.
