Broken Eggs - Activity Instructions

If it’s broken, eat it! This is not always the exact science but when it comes to eggs, it’s perfect. An egg has so much potential to bring happiness, so let’s see how many we can find.

Safety advice: The kitchen can be a dangerous place when not understood. Be careful of hot stoves; they can burn you. Keep any sharp or heavy objects in safe places.

It’s Whole

What shape is this egg?

Can you feel the smooth roundness of the surface? Caress it against your cheek and think of what’s inside. Is it a baby chicken? Well, it could be. But if you got it from the market it’s probably just got egg things inside.

Do you know that eggs are an important ingredient in many things that we cook? Binding, fluffing, smoothing.

Can you think of five things to make with an egg?

What a magical thing.

Be careful! Eggs can break easily.

But that’s okay. Let’s do it!

The Art of Breaking the Egg

How would you break an egg?

You could crush it underneath your foot.

You could smash it on your forehead.

You could throw it against the wall.

You could hit it like a golf ball.

But, these things might be a little messy and not very useful.

So, let’s say for now that we will hold the egg securely in one hand and tap it against the rim of a hard bowl. Not too soft, not too hard. And, CrAcK!

After you crack this egg, pull the shell apart carefully and let the insides fall into the bowl.

In the Bowl

There’s the egg insides right there. Does it look how you thought it would?

Look for the ‘white’ part - that’s actually the clear part. Or the ‘yolk’ - that’s the yellow part. Is there just one yolk? Sometimes, if you are ever so lucky, you might happen upon two yolks.

The yolk is like a whole ball of yellow floating within the sea of white.

Carefully, ever so slowly, can you touch the yolk without breaking it?

Now, not so carefully, push something into the yolk and see the yellow tumble out of its trappings into the field of white that was surrounding it.

The yolk is broken now.

Mix it

Things will break and still we can find happiness. Get your fork and whisk it all together.

Can you still see the whites? No? Oh, they disappeared. The yolk broke and then the white combined with the yolk and now the mixture is a yolky yellow.

Broken again.

Cooking it

There are many different ways to cook an egg. You can bake it in a cake. You can fry it whole. You can put 12 together and make an egg pie. You can make an egg souffle. You can leave the yolk whole and fry it. Poach it. Boil it. Half boil it. Separate the white from the yolk and create hollandaise, or custard, or meringues. You can have a hard yolk, or a runny one. So much versatility from something so small.

For now, let’s scramble it.

Safety in Kitchens

Kitchens can be dangerous places. Hot stoves, gas or electric, can burn you and there are many heavy and sharp objects around. Get your parents or caregivers to help turn the stove on. Put the pan on for a minute until hot enough to cook.

Place a slice of butter into the pan. Watch as it melts. Pour the eggs on top of the melting butter. It might make a nice little satisfying hiisssss as the egg mixture hits the pan.

Take a wooden spoon; mix the eggs as they cook. It won’t take long, the deep liquid yellow mixture turning to a soft, solid, pale yellow mixture. Turn the heat off; transfer the mixture onto a plate or in a bowl.

Recommended: Sprinkle some salt, or add some cheese on top.

Eat it

What was whole was broken and is now whole again; layers of happiness upon happiness. As you eat your delicious scrambled egg, think of the steps we went through. From the smooth round eggshell to the runny whites and whole yolk, to the broken yolk and the takeover of yellow. To the cooking into a solid that you can eat. Delicious!

Simpler instructions:

Step 1.

Take the bowl and the egg. Hold the egg in your hands and crack it against the bowl. Pull the shell apart carefully and let the insides fall into the bowl.

Step 2.

Take the fork and break the yolk. Whisk it together.

Step 3.

Heat the pan on the stove, put some butter in and pour the egg mixture on top. Stir as it cooks for the desired scrambled eggs effect.
