Tune In

Ask children to identify one thing that each of the Sprites could do and one thing they couldn’t do yet. For example:

Bia could swing really high but couldn't get the ball through the window
Millie could jump far but couldn’t get up the steep hill.
Zita could get the ball through the window but couldn’t jump over the gorge.

Find Out

Explain to children that we all have different bodies, do different things and therefore have different sets of skills.

“Our bodies can all do different things. Some things that you find easy might be really hard for your friends. Just like some things your friends find easy, you might find really hard. Let’s see the different things our bodies can do and what our bodies cannot do yet.”

Ask children to stand in the centre of the room. Show them as you place the “Got it!” sign at one end of the room and the ‘Not yet!’ sign on the opposite side of the room. Then show them each talent card, and direct them to think about which end of the room they move to.

For example, show the children the card depicting a child bouncing a ball. “If you can bounce a ball, move to this end of the room where it says ‘Got it!’, if you cannot yet bounce a ball, move to that end of the room where it says ‘Not yet…’.”

As the children move to their respective ends of the room, discuss what they notice. Explain that some children can do it, and some cannot yet. Explain that with practice, those who can do it can get even better at it, and those who can’t do it yet may learn how to.

Take Action

Invite children to sort the strength cards to recognise the different things that their bodies can do and cannot do yet.

Set up a small table with two containers, each labelled with the ‘Got It!’ and ‘Not Yet…’ printable templates. Print, cut and laminate the different talents. Children can then independently sort each of the cards into the relevant category. Once complete, the children will have a visual representation of the things their bodies can do and the things they cannot do yet. Prompt further discussion with the following questions:

There are some things in the ‘Not Yet…’ container. (offer an example of some of the things they placed in there) Does that mean you will never be able to do those things?
What might you need to do to learn that new skill?
Will everyone sort the same cards into the same containers? Why? Why not?
What is something from the ‘Not Yet…’ pile that you would really like to be able to do?
How can you make that happen?
Who could help you achieve this goal?”

Help the children explore a growth mindset. In this mindset, they can recognise their own capabilities and limitations but can also set goals and take steps to achieve them.
